As the Episcopal branch of the Jesus Movement, and followers of Jesus’ Way, we seek to live like him. We’re serious about moving out to grow loving, liberating, life-giving relationships with God (evangelism); to grow those relationships with each other (reconciliation); and to grow those relationships with all of creation (creation care). A Spiritual Home for all people

I will continue to pray for you, and I hope that you will pray for me.  I cannot wait to see you this Sunday, and I so look forward to being blessed by your prayers and your presence. If you were able to attend ourmost recent annual meeting, SaintMargaret’s is at a very crucialjuncture. We have survived thepandemic lockdowns, have a verycommitted group of followers ofJesus, and our church is on stableground. But Saint Margaret’s is notcalled to survive, we are called to goand build the Kingdom of God. The Rev. Tracy Cox, lead pastor of First United Methodist Church in Pittsburgh, said she’s cautiously hopeful for changes to the rules on ordination and marriage. The congregation, which has long been LGBTQ-affirming, held a commissioning service on April 14 for those attending the General Conference.

Grants assisted St. Peter’s in starting Thompson’s Orphanage, now Thompson Child and Family Focus. More recently the St. Peter’s Soup Kitchen, established in 1979, grew to include a number of downtown churches and now operates as Roof Above, serving the region’s poor and homeless in a variety of ways. Other outreach organizations launched from St. Peter’s include Samaritan House (post-operative respite for individuals who are homeless), Center City Concerts at St. Peter’s, and the Augustine Literacy Project. Receive announcements, updates, and schedules for our common life at St. Martin’s every Thursday in your email inbox.

It's Time to Think VBS!

It is the month of September, and at Saint Margaret’s, we find ourselves saying goodbye to our dear friends and members of the clergy, Fr. While I never expected these departures to occur so close together, they are a result of God’s call for each one of them. Lito+, a call to the retired life after 47 years of faithful ministry. Eric+, the exciting call to lead a congregation as its next rector. All this serves as a reminder that no matter the circumstance we find ourselves in, the story of Jesus continues to unfold in our world.

Youth Ministry

We are excited about our shared ministry together, and look forward to the new and exciting things God has planned for this Holy place. You can also worship with us via the Christ Church app and Facebook Live. The broadcast video remains available on the website through midday Wednesday each week.

Theologically, it is a time in which the Church looks back in remembrance to the great gift of our Savior’s birth, while at the same time looking forward to the promised second Coming of Jesus to reign as Lord of His re-created cosmos. The word Advent comes from the Latin word adventus, which means coming, which is where this season gets its name and meaning. Saint Margaret’s Episcopal Church is an exciting, vibrant, growing, and sacramentally centered parish in the Episcopal Diocese of North Carolina and a member of the worldwide Anglican Communion! Located in Waxhaw, North Carolina, we are located just south of Charlotte in one of the fastest growing counties of the state.

We believe that this church is a special church; a church in which you will feel the presence of Jesus in a real and dynamic way. A lively, energetic, and welcoming congregation, St. Peter’s is a Eucharist-centered parish in the heart of center city or “uptown” Charlotte. We print the first names of those for whom prayers are asked in the bulletins and on the website. The denomination also will be debating policy stances regarding fossil fuels and other issues as well as voting on major budget cuts to denominational programs, reflective of losing thousands of congregations.

United Methodists prepare for votes on lifting LGBTQ bans and other issues at General Conference

At their most recent meeting in 2019, Methodists voted to tighten an existing ban on same-sex marriages and gay and lesbian clergy. Conservatives in the Episcopal Church and the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, for example, have formed breakaway denominations in reaction to the acceptance of gay clergy. Catholic Church doctrine forbids same-sex relationships, but Pope Francis has alarmed some traditionalists by allowing priests to bless same-sex couples.

Youth and Young Adult C24 Conference

The 2010 renovation of the church included the installation of the Van Ness Hamrick Organ, C. B. Fisk Opus 136, a three-manual mechanical action pipe organ. Congregation and choir join in singing the songs and psalms of the church from the earliest Christian chant to hymns and anthems more recently composed. St. Peter’s impact on the community stretches back to its origins. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the congregation established two hospitals, then called St. Peter’s Hospital for the poor and Good Samaritan Hospital for blacks. Both were incorporated into what is now Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center.

After the 2019 General Convention, some 7,600 traditionalist churches across the United States — about 25% of the total number of U.S. churches — left the denomination, fearing that the tightening of the bans would not hold. The morning vote on the motion was part of a larger series of calendar items voted on in bulk. If you are looking for a church to call your own, we hope you will consider us!

Christian formation programs for young people are nationally recognized and emulated by many other churches in the region, especially Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and Journey to Adulthood. Each prepares young people for engaged Christian lives in the twenty-first century. The youth teens participate in mission trips, outreach camps, and pilgrimages. But whether that measure maintains church unity remains to be seen. The General Conference comes as the American portion of the United Methodist Church, long the nation’s third-largest denomination, has shrunk considerably. One-quarter of its U.S. churches left between 2019 and 2023 amid conservative dismay over the church’s failure to enforce its LGBTQ bans amid widespread defiance.

“The energy that’s gone into preparing for and trying to get to this moment can now be refocused,” said Jan Lawrence, the executive director of Reconciling Ministries Network, a group that advocates for full inclusion in the church. “We have a huge opportunity in front of us.” Ms. Lawrence noted that not only were all the group’s goals for the meetings likely to be achieved, but they were doing so in at atmosphere that was notably agreeable, even joyful. Further votes affirming L.G.B.T.Q. inclusion in the church are expected before the meeting adjourns on Friday.

No disease, no obstacle, no personal situation can thwart the spreading of the love of God through Jesus Christ that began on that day in Bethlehem. That is why I am so thankful that this year the church will be open, the community of faith will gather, and we will gaze together upon this wonderful act that God has done. Jesus calls us together so that you and I will go into the world, proclaim Him as risen from the dead, and baptize all people while we obey His commands. That’s what you and I are to spend our time and energy trying to faithfully do.

I’m tired of ministry via email, text message, and a computer screen. Don’t get me wrong; I am thankful that I have these tools by which I can stay connected to everyone, but I still do not like it. I cannot remember a time in my life when so many difficult circumstances were present in our society. Racial divisions, political turmoil, national unrest, war, poverty, disease. One identifier that is often not as easily shared is our relationship with our faith.

Each year the endowment provides further funding for community organizations in need and as catalyst for parish initiatives. Considered by many to be the “mother church” of the region, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church was the first Episcopal Church in Charlotte, organized in 1834 and recognized as a parish in the Diocese of North Carolina in 1844. Area churches including St. Martin’s, Holy Comforter, St. Mark’s, St. Michaels, St. Paul’s in Monroe, and Christ Church all trace their roots to St. Peter’s. For all questions and concerns about the prayer list, contact the Reverend Jacob E. Pierce, Rector. The clergy are also available, by appointment, for pastoral counseling or referral to appropriate licensed counselors.
